When you press the dock command on Roomba, the home base/charging dock emits infra red signals which are detected by the infrared receiver on its front bumper. It then follows the signal and docks into its home base automatically.
How does the Roomba know where the base is?
The Home Base emits infrared signals. Specifically, it emits three distinct signals: left, right, and halo. The Roomba detects these infrared signals with the raised sensor (RCON turret) at its front, as well as sensors integrated into its front bumper.
How long does it take Roomba to find home base?
Depending on the size of the room you Roomba should run for sometime between about 40 minutes and an hour. It will judge the room size when it starts cleaning, by circling in outward spirals.
Can I change Roomba home base location?
You can move a Roomba base. Your Roomba base location is mapped into the robot to ensure it finds its way back and recharges itself to continue cleaning or retire after cleaning, but nothing says your Roomba can’t find its way back to this base even after it has been moved.
Why cant my Roomba find home base?

iRobot says the device can remember up to 10 floorplans, meaning you can “kidnap” it, take it to a new place, and it will learn that one, too. (It will also work with Alexa and the Google Assistant, so you should be able to shout at an Echo Dot for the Roomba to clean a specific room you’ve just sullied.)
Where is the best place to put my Roomba dock?
- At least >1.5 ft (0.5 m>) on each side of the Home Base®.
- At least >4 ft (1.2 m>) in front of the Home Base®, with no furniture such as tables or chairs within this area.

Can you move Roomba from floor to floor?
A. Yes! The Roomba® i7 can remember up to 10 unique floor plans, so you can carry the robot to a different floor or a different home. As long at the robot has mapped the space, it will recognize its location and clean as directed.
